Moroccans Top List of Recipients of EU Citizenship
Rabat - Moroccans are ranked on top of nationals who have obtained the nationality of a European country in 2015, followed by Albanians and Turks, the General Directorate of the European Commission tasked with statistical information (Eurostat) said in a report on Friday.
86,100 Moroccan nationals have obtained the Italian, Spanish or French Nationality followed by Albanians (48,400) and the Turks (35,000).
"The largest group acquiring citizenship of an EU Member State in 2015 was citizens of Morocco (86 100 persons, of whom 88% acquired citizenship of Italy, Spain or France)," the report said.
Eurostat recalled that in 2015, about 840,000 people obtained the Nationality of an EU member state, a drop in the figure posted in 2014 (890,000) and in 2013 (980,000).
"In 2015, around 840 000 persons acquired citizenship of a Member State of the European Union (EU), down from 890 000 in 2014 and 980 000 in 2013," the report stated.
The same source added that more than 5 million residents were granted the nationality of an European Union member state since 2010.
"Since 2010, more than 5 million persons in total were granted a citizenship of an EU Member Sate. Of the total number of persons obtaining the citizenship of one of the EU Member States in 2015, 87% were non-EU citizens," Eurostat said.
